The results on the 23rd and 24th of August included some expected results, as well as some rather surprising wins and losses, meaning that the Premier League table holds some top clubs in low positions, as well as other clubs flying high, even when it was unexpected that they would do so.

It was expected that top of the table Chelsea and second place Liverpool would win their game this week, and they did just that. Liverpool played against Middlesbrough on Saturday and won, but had to rely on two late goals to ensure their 2-1 victory. Chelsea also won by just one goal, which came on the fourth minute against Wigan Athletic from their new signing Deco claiming his second goal of the season.

Arsenal didn’t do as well though, losing by one goal to nil against London rivals Fulham, with Hangeland scoring on the twenty seventh minute, but Arsenal didn’t play very well and failed to make an impact on the game, with Fulham deserving to take the three points.

Stoke City won their first ever game in the Premier League against Aston Villa during an extremely entertaining contest, in which Stoke scored a goal in the last minute of the game to ensure a 3-2 victory. The other newly promoted teams didn’t fare so well, however, with Hull drawing 1-1 with Blackburn and West Brom suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to Everton.

Other results included a 2-1 win for Sunderland against Tottenham, a thumping three goal victory for Manchester City against West Ham, and a 1-0 defeat for Bolton at Newcastle’s St. James’ Park.

The results mean that Chelsea top the table, beating second place Liverpool only on goal difference, with Portsmouth sitting at the bottom of the table, but Tottenham, West Brom and Wigan are only just above, all with no points.
